Agile Adoption Simulation Game (Using the X2A's special deck of cards)

X2A created a hands-on game that simulates the process of an organization aspiring to adopt agile practices. Participants are divided into groups of 6-10 (depending on the number of attendees). Then within each group the group members divide themselves again into two teams: (1) team COACH, representing the agile consultants/coaches that are usually hired to help with agile adoption and (2) team ORG, representing the organization aspiring to adopt agile.

For the first 20 minutes, Team ORG creates a mental model of an organization that wants to adopt agile practices. This organization can be real or fictional – but it should be realistic. Team ORG is aided by a template of the aspects to think about, such as their customers, the project situation, the competency of the developers, their morale, the management style etc. In the mean time, Team COACH is given a deck of 40 playing cards, each card representing a different agile practice. For the first 20 minutes team COACH spreads out the practices and gets acquainted with the different agile practices.

For the next 40 minutes team COACH interacts with team ORG (as a consultant/coach would do with an organization) to try to determine the most suitable set of agile practices the organization should adopt. What makes the exercise interesting is that ORG team has the right to accept or reject any practice suggested by team COACH. The number of practices accepted, rejected and the overall satisfaction of team ORG is documented and discussed with the group.

During the last 10 minutes of this exercise, the participants are given a chance to reflect about the exercise and talk about the challenges they experienced during the agile adoption simulation and its relation to real-life situations.
